대학의 등록금이 천정부지로 치솟고 있다. 결코 등정을 허락치 않을 것처럼 보이던 6만불 고지가 뉴욕의 세라 로렌스 대학에 의해 무너졌는가 하면, 지난 2년전에는 5만불을 넘는 학교가 단지 다섯 학교에 지나지 않았는데, 작년에는 58개교가, 올 해에는 마침내100개 학교가 5만불선을 넘어섰다. 더욱 걱정스러운 것은 캘리포니아 대학의 버클리 캠퍼스가 주립 대학으로는 처음으로 5만불의 문턱을 넘어섰다는 사실이다. 물론 이것은 비거주민 학비를 말하는 것이고 거주민 학비는 $27,770인 것이 위안이기는 하다.

등록금과 기숙사비등의 총비용을 통틀어 5만불을 넘는 학교 중에서 사립 대학은 99개교로 칼리지 보드가 조사한 대상인 1,058개 대학의 약 9%를 차지하는 숫자이다. 버클리를 제외하고 다른 주립 대학 중 4만불 이상의 학비가 드는 학교는 14개교인데, 이중 8개 대학은 캘리포니아 대학의 버클리와 UCLA등의 여타 UC 캠퍼스들이고, 나머지 6개교는the College of William & Mary, the Universities of Colorado at Boulder, Michigan at Ann Arbor, Texas at Austin, Vermont와 Virginia이다. 5만불 이상 학교들을 학비가 비싼 순서대로 살펴보면 (괄호 안의 숫자들은 올해와 작년의 학비 총액과 증가율임) 다음과 같다:
